Indiana University Audition Requirements

Clarinet Audition Requirements:

Bachelor of Music (B.M.)

Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.)

Bachelor of Science in Music and an Outside Field (B.S.O.F)

B.M. applicants should prepare:

  • Major and minor (harmonic, melodic) scales through 7 sharps and flats;
  • One slow etude;
  • One fast etude; and
  • Two contrasting solos from the standard repertoire.

B.M.E and B.S.O.F. applicants should prepare:

  • All major and minor (harmonic, melodic) scales through four sharps and flats;
  • One slow etude;
  • One fast etude; and
  • One solo from the standard repertoire.

(B.M.E. and B.S.O.F. students may audition on B-flat soprano or bass clarinet.)

Master of Music (M.M.)

Performer Diploma-Solo Performance (P.D.S.P.)

 MM and PD Applicants should prepare:

  • All major and minor (harmonic, melodic) scales through seven sharps and flats;
  • Three contrasting solos from the standard repertoire; and
  • Three contrasting orchestral excerpts.

Doctor of Music (D.M.)

Doctor of Music applicants must submit a prescreening video recording to be considered for a live audition. These video recordings must be received in the Office of Music Admissions by the December 1, application deadline.

Live auditions will take place during the February and March audition weekends (on the 1st Saturdays of each of those months) by invitation only. No pianist is required for the live audition.

DM Applicants should prepare both for prescreen and live audition:

  • All major and minor (harmonic, melodic) scales through seven sharps and flats; (contact clarinet faculty for specifics)
  • Three contrasting solos from the standard repertoire; and
  • Three contrasting orchestral excerpts.
